The Jeep line-up entered the 1990's in its strongest position in history. In March 1990, the one millionth Cherokee XJ was driven off the line at the Toledo Assembly. The Jeep Cherokee had become the Chrysler Corporation's European best seller.

A new vehicle, code-named ZJ, was in development, representing the eighth new platform of Jeep vehicles and the second vehicle developed under Chrysler's platform team approach. The vehicle would be named Grand Cherokee and would target upscale buyers with high expectations.

The Grand Cherokee soon proved to be successful. It was virtually redesigned in 1996 - with the power train, chassis, steering and interior all undergoing extensive refinement.

Alongside this, a new Wrangler was launched in the mid-90's.
